Big changes behind the scenes
So I guess some people (all 2 of my readers) are wondering what's going on with the blog. Well, let me tell you, it may not be pretty to look at right now, but with some help from John I have switched from Drupal 4.7 to 5.12 to 6.6 and moved onto 3sCo' server-land, it was a little touch and go there for a while, considering I am allergic to the command line. Also given the radical nature of the surgery my theme (which I was growing to hate) may have bitten the dust.
This change of domain/system is going to take longer than a simple theme repair job though, because it represents not just changing an aesthetic, but shifting life goals.
What's that you say, "shifting life goals" Je ne comprends pas...
Basically, (and I don't have much time to talk about this now because my dad is in the kitchen trying to make filter coffee using a yogurt container and a pile of napkins) you'll notice that not only has the server changed, so has the url. This might wreak havoc on people's RSS-a-mathingies, they will just have to deal, because from here on, I live at mirverburg.net, my design/integration work lives at 3scoDesign and never the twain shall meet.
The irony of course is that I am also poised on the brink of an even greater revelation. Once I have finished my MA, I am going to start building a career that doesn't include the direct production of websites.
This decision has been a long time coming so don't be too surprised. As many of my dear friends know, I have been feeling frustrated with the world of freelance web design for a while, not for any inherent problems with our clients or the company, I am just growing a little tired of being the one who stays up nights trying to make a div that floats all the way left without breaking in 6, (just to use an example) it doesn't feel as meaningful to me as it once did, and like all INFP personality types or whatever, I enjoy work when it expresses something important about who I am, and the kind of world I am trying to help create. I am still wildly happy that I have been able to work with a diverse array of socially meaningful web projects, but I am tired of being the person who is at remove from the people who make change. As a web designer I create objects that may help change to take place, but that is no the same as creating projects, programs or relationships that actually do benefit people and communities in a material way.
Thus lately, I have become increasingly focused on, and passionate about youth work, media production, writing, and community development. Now, this is only true for people, pplease don't leave some comment saying "but web development does contribute to meaninfgul social change etc.." I know for some people it does, but not for me and definitely not anymore.
The change of url indicates a major change of focus from design, to using my own interests in people, communities and social change to further a career in youth media, or community development. It's under my own name because the closer I get to actually doing what I want to do, what I think I ought to be doing, the more this site represents who I am. And hopefully the more it will be instrumental in helping me become the person and the professional I want to be.
So, welcome to mirverburg, the home of an erstwhile-web-girl.
I am excited to see what comes next.
