Miriam Verburg

I have an MA in Media Studies and a BfA from Concordia University. During my undergraduate degree my work focused on new media and print. During my Master's degree I used participatory research methods to explore how creative media projects for youth are integrated in community organizations and schools, from the perspective of organizers and facilitators.

While studying I have maintained a strong professional practice in community-based technology training, web design and youth work. I have worked for and consulted with a number of Montreal media arts and social change institutions, including the feminist new media arts centre StudioXX. In addition to teaching at XX I became their community coordinator and oversaw the installation of the thin-client Linux lab, and the development of a community-based workshop series.

For the past three years I have worked as the coordinator of the Digital Literacy Project at the Atwater Library where I develop and administrate creative media workshops on topics such as video, webdesign and audio for community groups, youth organizations, and high schools.

Through my work and study I look for interesting and sustaining ways that the intersections of media, technology, and social innovation can help us create a just and livable society.

During my admittedly limited spare time I enjoy walking my dog Lola, reading, getting over-involved in HBO mini-series, and making dinner for friends.
